What does it mean to live far from the city? What would it be like to live too close? Finding this ideal place in the countryside, at the right distance, is one of the first steps towards a change that has been attracting more and more people to the mountains of southeastern Brazil.
Serra da Mantiqueira is located between the largest metropolises in the country (SP, RJ, BH) and combines some rare factors in one place: a mild climate with pleasant temperatures, availability of pure water and air, safety, mountainous relief with landscapes of breathtaking and diverse fauna and flora with many preserved areas. As might be expected, a region with so many qualities has become recognized as one of the most interesting national destinations for those who appreciate nature and mountain climate.
But Mantiqueira has many Mantiqueiras, many valleys and mountains with their peculiarities and identities, landscapes that change and reveal new horizons at every turn along the way.
In one of the arms of Mantiqueira, located to the north of the Itatiaia Massif, stands the green and majestic Serra do Papagaio. This mountain range is linked to several others, such as Serra do Garrafão, Serra Negra and Serra Verde and, together, form a corridor of preserved slopes and high altitudes, which shelter a unique biodiversity and many of the headwaters of the Aiuruoca, Baependi and Verde rivers, tributaries of the Rio Grande basin.
The need to preserve these places led to the creation of the Serra do Papagaio State Park in 1998. The protection unit initially demarcated an area of 22,917 hectares and, recently, the limits were redefined and the park started to cover an area of 25,888 hectares . The park covers five municipalities (Aiuruoca, Alagoa, Baependi, Itamonte and Pouso Alto) and is surrounded by valleys with their villages, stories and traditions. The entire region is also part of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve and the Serra da Mantiqueira Environmental Protection Area (APA Mantiqueira) and is one of the regions of Minas Gerais that have the best preservation rates.
But Mantiqueira has many Mantiqueiras, many valleys and mountains with their peculiarities and identities, landscapes that change and reveal new horizons at every turn along the way.
